If you’ve ever seen a photographer advertise mini sessions and wondered what that actually means, you’re not alone. I get this question pretty often, so I thought it would be helpful to explain what mini sessions are and why so many families love them.
A mini session is essentially a shorter version of a full photography session. Instead of spending an hour or more together, mini sessions usually last about 10–15 minutes and take place at a pre-planned location with a styled setup.
Because several families are scheduled one after another, mini sessions are offered at a lower price than a full session. It’s a great option for families who want beautiful professional photos without committing to a longer session.
Mini sessions are especially great for families with little ones. Kids don’t always have the patience for a full hour of photos, so the shorter timeframe keeps things fun and stress-free. Some of the best smiles happen in those quick moments when kids are just being themselves.
They’re also perfect if you’re simply wanting updated family photos, milestone photos for your kids, or something seasonal.
That said, mini sessions and full sessions each have their place. Mini sessions are shorter, take place at a set location, and include a smaller number of final images. Full sessions allow more time, more variety, and more flexibility with locations and posing.
One of the things I love most about mini sessions is that they don’t have to feel like a formal photo shoot. I like to think of them as a little bit of playtime where kids can explore, laugh, and just be themselves. Those natural moments are often the ones families end up loving the most.
